November 19th, 2008 · No Comments

Starting from 1st January 2009, 279,000 more employees in Singapore will be covered under the Employment Act which was last amended in 1995. Under the new Employment Act, several significant changes have been made and their beneficiaries are as follows:

Firstly, 153,000 confidential staff in Singapore, such as secretaries and Human Resource clerks will be covered under the Employment Act.

Next, 44,000 junior managers and executives earning not more than S$2,500 in basic salary, will be able to use the Labour Court – a cheaper alternative to civil suits – to claim their salary.

Finally, 82,000 non-workmen – more vulnerable employees who carry out manual work such as machine operators and cleaners – will enjoy the additional employment protection and benefits provided by Part IV of the Employment Act as its monthly basic salary limit is increased from S$1,600 to S$2,000.

For all changes made to the Employment Act in Singapore.
